The role of sound in animation

The professional forum is a networking meeting aiming at bringing together animation professionals, academics and related institution, while it also focuses to the presentation of new tendencies and to the exploration of the networking and cooperation possibilities within the promising animation industry.
The aim is to create a space, where animation professionals can exchange ideas and experiences in current issues and trends of the animation sector and digital technologies. This year, the professional forum focused on the role of sound in animated films and explores sound as an inspiration of a narrative animation film as well as the work of creating a soundtrack for an animation film.
The forum sessions start on Thursday September 20, 2012 and conclude on Saturday September 22, 2012. The sessions will take place at the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Syros-Hermoupolis and Apollon Theatre (more information can be found at the festival’s programme).

 Dr. Anastasia Dimitra

Designer & Animator, Head of Studies at the department of 3D Animation & Multimedia productions of AKTO College since 1993 and she also teaches animation and graphic design at the University of Aegean at the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication. She holds a degree in Graphic Design, a Master of Arts in “Animation and Internet Applications” and a PhD in “Aesthetics in animation and Virtual Environments” from the University of Middlesex.  She is a member of the Board of Directors of ASIFA and has collaborated with a significant number of animation studios in production and artistic direction, while she has been the screenwriter and co-producer of an educational programme on animation aired on National Greek TV. She has also studied and developed educational schemes on animation and since 1990 she has participated in various relevant international workshops. Since 2006 she is president of AWG ASIFA - International Animated Film Association Workshop Group. Ms. Dimitra is the author of two books on animation.

Dr. Dimitris Tsoukas

He studied classical guitar, music theory and composition in Athens and London. He holds the ALCM Diploma in Composition from the London College of Music, Thames Valley University and the Mmus in Composition from the Royal Holloway University of London with distinction.
The main research interests include areas such as synthetic thought and music technology in the twenty-first century, digital audio production and virtual instrumentation, three-dimensional sound technology as well as sound design and animation. He has collaborated with various national and Orchestras and the National Opera. From 2009 he has been teaching music technology and contemporary music in Conservatories in Athens, which from 2010 he is teaching digital sound at the 3D animation & Multimedia programme of AKTO.

Ilias Pantoleon - Musician

Born in Athens in 1984. He studied composition at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music of the City University of New York, New York (USA) with Tania J. Leon, Jason Eckhardt, Douglas Cohen and Ben Bierman. He has composed for small groups and large contemporary ensembles of classical music and Jazz, as well as short films that were screened and awarded in film festival. In 2012 he released his first music album under the title "ANU-kites", while he is currently setting up an ensemble to present his new work in 2013.

Marios Strofalis - Musician

Born in Athens to1969. He began his studies in music at the age of six years at the National Conservatory and he was awarded among others with the diplomas in Piano, Choir Conducting and Composition. At the same time, he graduated with a degree in Biology from the University of Athens. He completed his academic studies in music composition, musicology and dramaturgy at the Conservatoire N. Superieur M. D. in Paris and at the University of Paris VIII.

He also pursued postgraduate studies in Piano with Vinia Tsopela and attended seminars by Constantine Ganev, Theodoros Antoniou, Karen Khachaturian in Moscow, where he even succeeded in studying at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and with Alain Banquart in Paris.

Patrick Smith

 Multi awarded and internationally acclaimed installation artist, animator and filmmaker, Patrick holds a Bachelor of Art from the University of Massachusetts. His work as an animation filmmaker includes a significant number of animation shorts (Masks-2010, Puppet -2006, Handshake- 2004, Moving Along-2004, Delivery -2002, Drink- 2000 and others), produced mainly through his own Blend Films and have been screened and awarded in over 50 International Animation Film Festivals all over the world. He is the director of the Emmy nominated series Downtown also director and animator of the series Daria, HeadTrip, Migraine Boy, Sports and Music Festival (1998-2001) , all for MTV. Patrick has also worked as a storyboard artist in Doug for Walt Disney Studios, as a freelance animation director on commercials for MTV Commercials, Acme Filmworks, Pitch Inc and Plus et Plus creative agency in NYC. He is the co-founder along with Bill Plympton of Scribble Junkies Festival of Hand Drawn Film in New York City, a film festival dedicated to drawn animation and of Annecy Plus Festival.

Following a thorough review of the dominant phenomenon of patter in American animation, the work shows through the analysis of films of Sylvain Chomet a different approach between animation and the sound design, in relation to vocalization and nonverbal communication. Through the study of the phenomenon of non verbal dialogue, the expression through words as an animation style is disputed both semantically and functionally, leading to the unexpected result of creating new needs and requirements for strengthening the characters through partial or total elimination of the dialogue. Thus, animation is released and gets a tremendous momentum with respect to expressiveness, sonic entity and phenomenological dimension, free from of verbosity features that not only act as an impediment to the evolution of storytelling but their absence transforms and enhances expression in the film, offering space for authenticity.
